Career Intern Program

The Career Intern Program is designed to attract exceptional men and women to the Federal Workforce who have diverse professional experiences, academic training, and competencies and to prepare them for careers in public service. The initial appointment is for two-years. Career Interns may be non-competitively converted to career or career-conditional appointments after completing the two-year internship. External (applicants outside the Federal Service) and Internal applicants (current Federal Employees and previous Federal Employees with non-competitive status) compete under the same application process. Position has promotion potential to the next grade level up to a GS-9.

West Virginia anticipates filling Soil Conservationist positions with this hiring authority.  The specifics of these positions are detailed  below.

Soil Conservationist

Soil Conservationist Career Intern

What they do:
Serves as a Field Soil Conservationist by providing assistance to the District Conservationist in implementing Farm Bill Programs. Provides conservation planning assistance to individuals and groups. Assists landowners and operators in the development, application and maintenance of conservation plans. Assists with the application of planned resource management systems. Contacts cooperators and follow-ups on the status of conservation plans. Develops news articles and informational programs, conducts field tours, and demonstrations to further district’s programs.

Qualification Requirements:
GS-457
A. Degree: soil conservation or related agricultural or natural resource discipline such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural education, or agricultural engineering. The study must have included 30 semester hours in a natural resource or agricultural field, including at least 12 semester hours in a combination of soils and crops or plant science. Of the 12 semester hours, a minimum of 3 semester hours must have been in soils and 3 semester hours in crops or plant science.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience--at least 30 semester hours in one or more of the disciplines as shown in A above, including at least 12 semester hours in a combination of soils and crops or plant science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Of the 12 semester hours, a minimum of 3 semester hours must have been in soils and 3 semester hours in crops or plant science.
