photo of Sherry Sherry Finkel, a student a Bucknell College, spent the summer furthering conservation efforts in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Sherry donated 155 hours to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), West Virginia Conservation Agency, and the Monongahela Conservation District. During the summer, Sherry gave conservation education programs, entered data in the Farmland Protection data base, collected soil samples, performed Nitrogen Quick tests, created a display, and performed clerical support duties.

NRCS presented Sherry with the 2007 West Virginia Earth Team Volunteer Award for the quality of assistance given during the 155 hours that she donated. Sherry wrote a news article about her experience that was published in the Fall 2007 issue of Volunteer Voice (http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/feature/volunteers/voice/volunteervoicefall2007.pdf)

Following are some excerpts from the article:

  • I was thrilled to know that I was contributing to such an important conservation measure.
  • Our conversations have strengthened my fervor for working in the environmental field.
  • Visiting stream reclamation sites throughout Tucker County was by far the most incredible experiences of my summer. I was overwhelmed by the natural beauty, as well as the cooperative efforts of landowners and various agencies to maintain the streams.
I was thrilled to know that I was contributing to such an important conservation measure.
