MORGANTOWN, WV, Jan. 22, 2007 — The USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS) selected Kevin Wickey to serve as the State
Conservationist for West Virginia. As State Conservationist, Wickey
oversees the federal agency’s programs, operations, and staff in West
Virginia. He succeeds Ron Hilliard who is now Oklahoma's State
Conservationist.
Wickey grew up on a 400-acre family farm in Burr Oak, Michigan. He
earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry at Michigan
Technological University in 1985. |
Wickey began his career with the agency – then known as the Soil Conservation
Service (SCS), in 1984 as a Student Trainee in Michigan. He continued serving in
Michigan as a Soil and District Conservationist before becoming the GIS
(Geographical Information System) and State Resource Inventory Specialist. In
1992, he became Project Manager at the Information Technology Center in Fort
Collins, Colorado. In 1997, he served as the Business Processing Reengineering
Program Manager in the National Headquarters in Washington DC. In 1999, he
returned to Michigan as the Assistant State Conservationist – Technology.
“I'm excited to be in West Virginia and look forward to working with our staff
and partners to promote conservation and the NRCS mission of helping people help
the land,” said Wickey.
Kevin and his wife Judy have one son and three daughters who will be joining him
in West Virginia later this spring.
NRCS provides technical and financial assistance to West Virginia farmers and
other landowners to help them improve and protect the commonwealth’s soil,
water, and other natural resources. The agency has a state headquarters in
Morgantown and offices throughout West Virginia. For more information, visit
