Gassaway Field Office

Program: Conservation Education

Overview: The Elk Conservation District held a conservation field day for Braxton County Middle School special education students at Holly Gray Park on September 13, 2002.
The day was a huge success thanks to volunteers from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the West Virginia Division of Forestry, West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, the West Virginia Conservation Agency and the Central West Virginia Animal Hospital.
Hands-on sessions in soils, forestry, wildlife, water quality, Native American heritage and farm animals were held in the new multipurpose facility.
Two hundred children attended the Field Day and enjoyed petting the farm animals and learning about conservation.

Community Benefits: Children who learn about conservation of our natural resources grow up to be well informed adults who are better stewards of their land.
