Benefits Over The Years
Program: Conservation Technical
Assistance (CTA), Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
Overview: Denzil became interested
in a conservation plan for his farm in 1962. Since then, he has completed
numerous practices to maintain and enhance his 204 acre farming operation.
Denzil has been a participant in USDA programs such as Agricultural Conservation
Program (ACP), EQIP and Emergency Conservation Program (ECP). In 1999, Plum Run
in Marion county was identified through EQIP as a priority area. Denzil
participated in the program to continue to improve his farm and help address the
resource concerns in his community.
Accomplishments: Conservation
Farmer of the Year through Monongahela Conservation District for Marion county
in: 1968, 1980, 2000.
Program Benefits to Landowner:
Denzil and Louise Parker have benefited greatly over the years from the
assistance the NRCS has been able to provide to them. Louise was asked what
benefits she felt had the greatest impact with the farm, she stated, “The water
situation is much better throughout the farm. The gravel around the feeding pad
helped keep the area from getting muddy and the woodland exclusion fence really
helped to keep the cattle where they needed to be.” In May 2004, Denzil and
Louise completed their EQIP contract and the latest conservation plan. Denzil
has installed many conservation practices over the years on other farms as a
private contractor and is sure to meet NRCS standards and specifications if at
all possible. Denzil is a member of Marion county’s FSA County Committee.
Program Benefits to the Community:
- increased water quality of Plum Run
- lower amount of soil erosion from farm since completing heavy use are
protection practice around feed pad and a water trough
- less potential for nutrient leaching since applying lime and fertilizer
according to NRCS standards and specifications
