Program Reduced Erosion and Improved Access and Water Quality

Program or Category: Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

Overview: A Harrison County farmer recently entered into a 5-year EQIP contract. One item that was addressed was a gully erosion adjacent to an access road. Runoff from the pasture and farm access road had eroded a channel that was approximately 5 feet deep and over 5 feet wide. Under EQIP, NRCS planned to install 30 feet of culvert pipe, 230 feet of lined waterway and a 24-inch drop box with an additional 330 feet of pipe to carry the water to a stable outlet.

Accomplishments: A 240 foot lined waterway was constructed in addition to 380 feet of plastic pipe for surface water drainage and a 26 inch drop box with grate to collect surface water. Installation of this practice will save an estimated 400 cubic feet of soil erosion per year. Although the project has only been installed a few months, the landowner has noted that the project worked been very successfully through some high intensity rainfall events.

Program Benefits to Landowner: Benefits to the landowner include a reduction in soil erosion, improved access to his farmland and a reduction in sedimentation into nearby streams.

Program Benefits to Community: Benefits to the community include reduced sedimentation into Little Tenmile Creek & improved water quality.
