West Virginia Success StorySolving Environmental Concerns TogetherProgram or Category: EQIP Overview: An identified 303(d) stream was identified with high levels of fecal coliform and sedimentation. The 303(d) list is a compilation of streams that violate water quality standards and are considered impaired by pollution. As a result, emphasis was placed on addressing these resource concerns in this watershed. Accomplishments: One of the noteworthy accomplishments was conservation plan implementation on a 200 acre + farm that focused on addressing water quality concerns on a beef operation. The landowner, with cost share assistance, constructed a 1500 square foot roofed concrete pad with attached animal waste stacking facility. Several other practice were incorporated to enhance its effectiveness including: a 900 square foot animal walkway, 250 feet of diversions, a pond, a livestock trough, prescribed grazing and nutrient management. Program Benefits to Landowner: The improvements benefited the landowner in many ways including: easier access to feeding area during winter months, less wear and tear on his equipment, increased the amount of animal waste that could be collected and hauled spread on hay land, improved livestock health and gains. Program Benefits to Community: The improvements benefited the community by reducing possible sedimentation and animal waste in the 303(d) identified stream. The feeding area is also close to the road and is used as a model winter-feeding area throughout the community. Contact: Point Pleasant Service Center−Serving Putnam and Mason Counties
