Harrison County Farmer Installs Rubber Tire Trough

Program: Conservation Technical Assistance (CTA), Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI)

Overview: William Randolph, a farmer from the Lost Creek area in Harrison County, recently installed a rubber tire trough on his farm. LaRae Baker, Soil Conservationist in the Mount Clare FO, had contacted Mr. Randolph about updating his conservation plan. During the visit she discovered Mr. Randolph had two Rubbermaid Troughs that had leaks in them. These had been installed according to a design from the Mount Clare FO in 1999.

After a discussion about the problem, it was found that these were the second set of Rubbermaid troughs installed by Mr. Randolph since then. LaRae asked how he felt about installing rubber tire trough.  He said he would have to think about it since he had never installed one. After some more discussions about the benefits of a rubber tire trough, Mr. Randolph decided that he would try one.  He actually found one for free so the only cost to him to replace the old trough was the new pipe fittings and concrete.

Benefits: So far, Mr. Randolph has been very impressed with the rubber tire trough. He plans on installing two more on his farm by spring.
