West Virginia Success Story
Dominion Day at North Bend State Park
Program: Resource
Conservation and Development (RC&D)
Overview: Little Kanawha RC&D is in the initial stages of constructing a
multi-purpose hiking, biking, and equestrian trail around North Bend Lake in
Ritchie County. On September 27, approximately 80 volunteers joined together to
break ground on the new trail.
Accomplishments: Dominion Corporation, through its annual employee
volunteer program, sent 53 of its employees to help construct the new trail. In
one day, nearly 5,600 feet of new trail was constructed by hand. The trail winds
through the scenic woodlands above the lakes lower reaches.
This is the beginning of a planned 20 mile trail that will encircle the lake
upon completion. Floyd Hodge, Little Kanawha RC&D Board Member and County
Commissioner, was pleased with the number of volunteers that assisted in the
construction of this new trail. He commended Dominion for their representation
at the work day. Hodge also praised the Shiloh Trail Riders Equestrian Club for
their involvement in the trail, the West Virginia Department of Highways (DOH),
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the Ritchie County Economic
Development Authority (RCEDA).
Ron Fletcher, Board Member for Little Kanawha RC&D stated that the RC&D is
administering over $100,000 in grant funds for the construction of the trail.
The Shiloh Trail Riders locally raised $20,000. The State DOH contributed
$80,000.
