West Virginia Success Story
Animal Waste System Installed in Harrison County
Program: Environmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP)
Overview: Mr. Rick Nutter
installed an animal waste system on his farm. This allows him to feed during
the winter in an area about a half of a mile away from the stream he had fed
near in the past.
Accomplishments: Mr. Nutter
successfully completed all his animal waste system structure requirements. He
has 75 days of storage and has a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan which delegates
the fields to receive the manure. This feed pad and storage area
keep about 50 head of cattle away from the stream during winter feeding times.
Program Benefits to Landowner: Mr. Nutter will enjoy a shorter travel
distance to feed his cows this winter. The increased distance to his streams
from the feeding area will improve the water quality on his farm. Soil
will no longer be compacted in the past fee. Mr. Nutter will also spread nutrients back on some of his hay meadows
from the manure he collected on his feed pad this winter.
Program Benefits to Community: The community will benefit by having
better stream water quality in Hacker’s Creek. Hacker’s Creek is habitat for
endangered Clubshell Mussels that will also benefit from improved water quality.
