West Virginia Success StoryUpland Wildlife Development in Barbour CountyProgram: Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) Overview: Gary McCauley, a landowner in Barbour County was recognized for his positive experience with the WHIP program. There was an article, "WHIP Your Land Into Shape for Wildlife", written highlighting Gary’s success in the seasonal journal West Virginia Wildlife. Gary claims, “WHIP is a win-win situation for landowners and for improving habitat for wildlife.” Gary came to the Philippi field office for assistance in September, 2003. Since then, with the assistance of NRCS, DNR, and the WHIP program he has had success with developing wildlife habitat on his land. When commenting about his experience with the agency, Gary says, “The people involved at the DNR and NRCS have been very helpful and good to work with.” Accomplishments: Practices Mr. McCauley has implemented include: a five acre stand of switch grass, one acre of corn for wildlife (without cost share), and a 500 foot herbaceous field border. Benefits: Warm season grasses such as switch grass provide nesting habitat and cover for a variety of ground nesting songbirds, rabbits and other wildlife species. The herbaceous field border has created more forage and cover for a variety of wildlife species including ruffled grouse and woodcock. The corn is providing food for many species of wildlife.
