West Virginia Success StoryWes-Mon-Ty RC&D Improves Gilmer County Recreation AreaProgram: Resource Conservation and Development RC&D Overview: The Wes-Mon-Ty RC&D Area covers three Soil Conservation Districts consisting of twelve counties. The Gilmer County Recreation Area is used year around and is home to numerous fairs and festivals. The area is home to the County 4-H Camp, FFA activities, special county and Glenville State College events, and the Gilmer County Fair. Many of the events center on the agriculture in the county. The existing agricultural building was in disrepair and too small to host the ever-growing number of events. Accomplishments: In 1995 the Gilmer County Commission requested RC&D assistance to improve or replace the facilities. The Recreation and Tourism Committee accepted the project. The committee used Council funds from the West Virginia Soil Conservation Agency to make three small grants totaling $9,150 to the Commission. It was the seed money provided by the Wes-Mon-Ty RC&D Area that made it possible to acquire additional funds. The group working on the project utilized donated equipment and volunteer labor as matching in-kind funds. The Gilmer County Recreation Center now boosts a new 50’ x 120’ enclosed structure with and attached 50’ x 80’ livestock show ring. Benefits: Completion of the project is testimony to the value of RC&D and the ingenuity of local Board members. When local people work to solve local problems and are not concerned with who gets the credit, great things happen. Contact:
