West Virginia Success Story

American Discovery Trail Information Kiosk at Dolly Sods Recreation Area

Program or Category: Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D)

Overview: The American Discovery Trail (ADT) was first put into service in the early 1990s. The trail traverses 6,800 miles across the US, running from Cape Henlopen State Park on the Atlantic Ocean in Delaware to Point Reyes National Sea Shore on the Pacific in California. Sixty-five miles are in the Potomac Headwaters Region in Hampshire, Mineral and Grant Counties. The Potomac Headwaters Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) adopted the promotion of the ADT about 1992. As part of promotion the RC&D has helped mark the trail and provide information about the ADT. One more is actually planned for the Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. Kiosks display long-distance trail information, local trail information, and local safety information. The total cost in cash and in-kind services for the five kiosks was over $10,000. Green Springs Park Association provided $3,500 for their kiosk. The Appalachian Forest Heritage Area provided a $1,000 grant. But, most of the funds and in-kind was provided directly by the RC&D.

Accomplishments: The ADT was marked by trail signs along 65 miles of trail in the three PH RC&D counties. Five information kiosks were planned, funded and erected at Green Springs, Fort Ashby, Paw Paw, Greenland Gap, and most recently at the Dolly Sods Recreation Area (which is part of the Monongalia National Forest). Graphics were developed in house to fit the location and character of each site.
