Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP)

On April 19, 2002 the US Department of Agriculture's Secretary Anne Venemon and Gov. Bob Wise signed the official Memorandum of Agreement to implement the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program in West Virginia.

This program, known as CREP, is a federal-state land retirement program targeted to address state and nationally significant agriculture-related environmental problems. This voluntary program uses financial incentives to encourage farmers to enroll in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in contracts of 10 to 15 years to remove marginal lands from agricultural production.

It combines Federal and State resources to address agricultural resource problems in specific environmentally sensitive geographic regions.

The West Virginia CREP is aimed at reducing the occurrence of runoff, sediment, and nutrients from agricultural enterprises into the Potomac, New and Greenbrier, and Little Kanawha Rivers. The program will help landowners install, establish, and/or restore riparian buffers, filter strips, wetland areas, trees, and grasses to improve and protect water quality and enhance soil, water and wildlife resources.
